Social Structure

Pride Size4-20 lions (average: 10-15)

Composition1-3 males, 4-12 females, plus cubs

   Lion Identification

  • Males: Large mane (color varies from blonde to black), 190-225 kg, more muscular build

  • ♀ Females: No mane, 120-150 kg, more streamlined build

  • Cubs: Often spotted coat that fades with age

Hunting Behavior

Primary Hunters: Females (90% of hunting)

Strategy: Cooperative ambush hunting

Success Rate: 25-30% of hunts successful

Preferred Prey: Wildebeest, zebra, buffalo

Hunting Signs: Alert posture, intense focus, crouching, stalking

Safari Viewing Tips

​DO:

  • Stay quiet in the vehicle

  • Use binoculars to scan tall grass

  • Look for birds circling (potential kill site)

  • Follow other safari vehicles (they may have spotted lions)

  • Listen for roars (can carry up to 8km)

DON'T:

  • Stand up or extend limbs outside vehicle

  • Make loud noises that could disturb hunting

  • Approach lions on foot without a trained guide

  • Interfere with hunting behavior

  • Get too close to cubs
